If you like anchovies (acciughe in Italian; pronounced, ah- choo- geh), you’ll love the little village called Aspra. If you don’t like anchovies, you’ll still love the little village called Aspra. The reason I mention anchovies is that Aspra is a fishing village and their local anchovies are exported all over the world. It even has a museum dedicated to the anchovy (acciuga). The village of Aspra has Arabic roots as does its name, which means ‘Stone’ due to early excavation of a limestone called Calcarenite.

Every morning you can see people beginning their day with a workout by walking, running or biking along the via that takes you from Bagheria to Aspra called ‘U Rittufilu’ in Sicilian. The actual name of the street is Corso Baldassare Scaduto or Via Scaduto…Every time I come to Bagheria, I walk ‘U Rittufilu’ almost every morning. I see a variety of sights and activity on this street. The sights have changed over the past 30 some years. No more the olive groves and the scent of lemon trees that were cultivated along the sides of its street yet the walk is still pleasant, the nature still bold, and the sea sits and waits for your arrival.
